| One of the most important concepts being implemented today is called CONSPICUITY…increasing truck visibility with reflective markings both on the sides and rear of trailer units. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration research has shown (based on a study of 4,000 trucks and trailer units) that trucks marked with reflective materials actually reduced nighttime collisions by 21.2% and daytime collisions by 16.3%. An early study from the Michigan Highway Safety Institute of 181 nighttime accidents involving unmarked rigs found that 51% of the time cars drove into the rear of trailers either directly or to the right or left trying to avoid the truck. The next most vulnerable areas were the sides, accounting for 46% of the accidents. This key research was important in the government making retro-reflective tape mandatory for full perimeter markings on trailers. |
