"In 2001, large trucks were 3 times as likely as other vehicles
to be struck in the rear in two-vehicle fatal crashes."

More and more trucks are traveling the nation's highways. Those same trucks are accounting for an ever growing number of highway miles traveled. And while over the past 10 years the vehicle involvement rate for large trucks involved in injury or fatal crashes has went down, the numbers of fatalities has stayed about the same.

In fact, each year approximately 5,000 persons die as a result of large truck accidents in the United States. In addition, more than 130,000 persons are injured.

Organizations like the American Trucking Association, Department of Transportation and National Traffic Safety Administration are but a few groups being pressured (as are many trucking firms) to find new ways of reducing truck related accidents.
